چکیده

Intensionality phenomena were first discussed by Frege (1893) in the context of sentential complement constructions like (1a,b). Frege noted that substitution of co-referring terms in clausal complements needn’t preserve truth (1a,b).1 Another feature of these environments is that the presence of a nonreferring or nondenoting term needn’t yield a false sentence (2a). Furthermore, an indefinite in such an environment can be read nonspecifically; thus in (2b), Max can believe a famous actor to be in the movie without there being any particular famous actor such that Max believes he or she was in the movie:

An Operational Approach to Fine-Grained Intensionality

Classical intensional semantic frameworks, like Montague’s Intensional Logic (IL), identify intensional identity with logical equivalence. This criterion of co-intensionality is excessively coarse-grained, and it gives rise to several well known difficulties. Theories of fine-grained intensionality have been been proposed to avoid this problem. Several of these provide a formal solution to the ...

Anaphora and Intensionality in Classical Logic

The dynamic per^)ective on natural language suggests that texts change the value o f contextual parameteis in much the way computer programs change the value o f program variables. One phenomenon where dynamic aspects emerge is that o f anaphora (introduction o f referents for later a n ^ h o ric links), but intensionality and tense are other candidate phenomena. However, most logics used in co...

Type-theoretic logic with an operational account of intensionality

Classical intensional semantic representation languages, like Montague (1974)’s Intensional Logic (IL), do not accommodate fine-grained intensionality. Montague, following Carnap (1947), characterizes intensions as functions from worlds (indices of worlds and times) to denotations, and so reduces intensional identity to equivalence of denotation across possible worlds. As has frequently been no...

Intensionality and context change

It is arguably desirable to have a theory of meaning that (i) does not identify propositions with sets of worlds, (ii) enables to capture the dynamic character of semantic interpretation and (iii) provides the basis for a semantic program that incorporates and extends the achievements of Montague semantics. A theory of properties and propositions that meets these desiderata is developed and sev...

Automatic Synthesis of Semantics for Context-free Grammars

We are investigating the mechanical transformation of an unambiguous context-free grammar (CFG) into a deenite-clause grammar (DCG) using a nite set of examples, each of which is a pair hs; mi, where s is a sentence belonging to the language deened by the CFG and m is a semantic representation (meaning) of s. The resulting DCG would be such that it can be executed (by the interpreter of a logic...
